THE DON JONES INDEX…

NOTE: Consequences of the Coronavirus (disappearance or inaccuracy of data, internet inaccessibility etc.) mean that this index may or will not be appearing weekly but rather biweekly, or monthly, or not at all.  We hope such readers as we still possess remain healthy and/or, as the religionists say, “see you on the other side”.  After all, how much worse can Hell be than another Georgia summer?

LESSON for July 8, 2020 – DIRE TRANSPIRINGS!  (including pertinent selections from Camus’ “le Peste”)

Everything, one wonld think, based upon the words of newscasters, this week, is coming up “dire”.  Authorities on the extent of cases warn that the situation is dire.  Mortality counters report a “dire” spike in the death tolls.  And, especially in the sunbelt, testers without test equipment, healthcare workers without PPE, first responders and morticians agree,,, the situation is dire.  Don Jones, if not already deceased, is likely to become a die-r… and soon.

And is he and the family to blame?  Uh huh!  The President, still believing the plague to be a Chinese hoax, having devolved detection and treatment to the states, Governors… mindful of the plummeting economy… opened up way too early and, instead of Americas industrious little worker-bees trudging back to work, they gleefully flocked to pool parties and pool halls and nightclubs and threw their hands in the air, dancing and drinking like there was no tomorrow – like they were Prospero’s magical unicorns defying the Red Death (see Black Helicopters, Chapter Eight the week after next or archived).

Now, the dire threats are about another round of closings, while the experts squabble over whether this is the start of Phase Two of the CV dance of death, or simply an extension of Phase One.

Just as the Dow (originally), the Don started nosediving, led by catastrophic indices in the health and economic sectors… although the spectre of debt swelled in the background due to the expense of caring for the sick and the jobless.  Bright spots were few and unrelated – a Saudi/Russian spat sent oil prices downward for awhile (although there was really no place to go since resorts had and many still have closed down).

We’ve had to tweak some of the numbers in order to prevent whole categories from falling off the cliff, and the tweaking will continue now that the hope of an early end to the pandemic (four or five months) has dissolved; the outlook now ranging from a year (as in Camus’ bubonic plague, with which we have been attaching to our weekly bills of particulars) to… two?  Five?  Twenty?

So we have appended our yearly chart of the ups and downs of Don and the Joneses, but with a distinction…

Because we have consolidated some categories over the past seven years, up- or downgraded them or added new elements to the Index, pay attention to the coloured entries on the chart.  Where feasible, we have taken either the original or most recent  values, dividing them by the years of measurement.

And remember, we are using a point system, somewhat like the Dow, only a portion (less than half) are based on objective reckonings… wages, prices, unemployment states etc… while other factors, particularly among the Social Indices, are aggressively subjective (as decreed by the former Congressman and independent Presidential candidate Jack “Catfish” Parnell (see “Black Helicopters” for further details).  He has made a (slight) effort to de-partisanize the data… rising house prices are good for sellers, not so for buyers, higher inflation puts more money in the pockets of producers (which they may or may not share with their employees),  And, to prevent the indices from quickly falling to zero and below, we have attempted to find silver linings in some unmistakably grim categories… “Disasters” perhaps overperforming on miraculous and narrow escapes, “Crime” giving more weight to perpetrators caught.  And, of course, Social measures such as freedom and justice (originally separate, now combined), politics, peace and terror (well, not so much fair play for the Taliban) have different strokes for different folks.

We’ll launch into our causes and effects next week with the data for July in hand… barring a cure, or a war, but, even before July, 2019, it was obvious that, while the overall fortunes of Don Jones were up somewhat (now thoroughly eroded), those of the rich people who socked away their fortunes in the Dow were up… way, way up, and even at the nadir of the plague market (when, after a summit of 29,551 on Lincoln’s Birthday, we crashed through the glass floor of 19,000 on March 18th before an injection of stimulus cash.  The stimulus fended off starvation but the public health continued plunging.
