LESSON for JANUARY FIRST, 2024 – “RECONSTRUCTION!

Today is the first day of the New Year and firsts all around; first babies born (including the twins, one born in 2023, th’ other in 2024), first puppies born, first NFL playoff games, first hangover).  Time to vomit all of 2023 away – time to clean up, reconstruct and repurpose the Indices.

Our Lesson: December 25th through 31st, 2023

Dow:  Closed

It’s Christmas, and all the network news programs are on tape. Fortunately, the news keeps repeating itself: economic distress, wars in Ukraine and the Mideast.  There are visits to former scenes of disaster like Rolling Fork, MS (tornado), Paterson, NJ (flooding) and Maui (fire). The holidays in Bethlehem are poignant – West Bank Christians are siding with Hamas and showing off a crèche of rubble with the baby Jesus buried like so many children in Gaza and Pope Francis delivers a worrisome sermon (Attachment One).  But Americans are spending and throwing parties like it’s 2018 BC (before Covid) and putting their purchases on plastic.

Except for a few snowy mountains in the Rockies, it’s also clear and mild... charity abounts, plenty of sports and cheap gas.  Santa is visiting 800 homes per second and leaving 300,000 tons of gifts.

Russian opposition leader Navalny surfaces in a Siberian prison camp while Russians show a video of hostage Paul Whelan begging President Joe to free him.  Torture?

Tuesday, December 26, 2023

Dow:  37,545.33

The mild Christmas weather disappears as a wild storm brings blizzards, floods, tornadoes and carnage on the highways.  Back to work commuters slip and slide, back to court Trump slips and slides over legal issues and posts holiday greetings full of his grievances.

The tides of war are turning west.  Israel kills a top Iranian general skulking about Syria while Ukrainians shot down three Russian fighter jets and then sink a battleship off Crimea.  A sense of urgency is in the air as Republicans continue holding foreign military aid hostage to their beliefs on the border and abortion.

Up in Rome (Georgia), the volatile Rep. MTG reports being “swatted” by pranksters and police for the eighth time.  “The Color Purple” reaps a hefty 18M in B.O. on Christmas Day.

Wednesday, December 27, 2023

Dow:  37,656.52

Christmas is over and the days of snarled and stalled returning and New Years’ traffic fall upon Don Jones – the weatherpeople decrying “a wrench” thrown into the previously smooth skies, seas and roads.  As a series of storms pelt the Pacific Coast, then travel East, Joneses in the Midwest and BosWash corridor endure not only the usual floods and blizzards but what is called a “shroud” of fog.

Preparations for the New Year are obstructed by FBI-spread paranoia about “bad actors”, but the Times Square ball is prepared anyway.  E-con-mystics pronounce the Christmas shopping sprees to be potent; but with a twist... consumers are spending less on gifts, more on themselves; stocking up on clothing, toys and fine dining and putting it all on plastic.  “Just because they spend the money doesn’t mean they have the money,” cynics warn.

President Joe dispatches DHS Mayorkas and SecState Blinken to Mexico with border pileup red lights blinking and MAGA raging.  Caravans of migrants flow north like the Pacific storms from the west and West... Kanye, that is... issues more tweets and even a video praising Hitler.  But there’s good news still... a trucker trapped under a collapsed Indiana overpass is rescued after six days off the road and Dolly Parton visits a cancer patient, striking at least one bucket off his list.

Dow:  37,754.52

A lost generation laments the passing of iconic Tommy “Mom always liked you best” Smothers – comedian, TV star (until CBS fired him and Dick for protesting the Vietnam War) and acknowledge role model for a generation of politically pungent performers.

The ongoing bad weather continues with more blizzards striking the Midwest.  Israel is striking the Mideast, bombing more refugee tent cities in Gaza while Hamas reportedly kills another American hostage – a 79 year old woman.  Drone and missile exchanges with Lebanon’s Hezbollah and West Bank Palestinians draw the region closer to a wider war; American warships attack Yemenese terrorists in an attempt to keep Red Sea shipping open.

The eyes of Texas head to court as Democratic mayors in New York, Chicago, Denver and other northern cities try to stop migrant busins while, outside Houston, a teenager invites two “friends” to his house, then shoots him with the gun his mother bought him.  Plaigerism cases include the NY Times versus MicroSoft over Open AI, Apple fighting lawsuits by Brits contending their new watches are stolen intellectual property.  Momfluencer friend Jode Hildebrandt pleads guilty as accessory to child abuse, faces 60 years if cases are judged concurrently, as the Judge suggests.  But fraudster/killer/all-around bad guy Alex Murdaugh’s conviction may be overturned because of his tampering, publicity-seeking court clerk.

Friday, December 29, 2023

Dow:  37,689.54

Rogue waves 30 feet high lash California coast, sweeping away cars, homes and people.  More storms predicted.  But the East Coast is drying out

Police and Feds prepare for New Years’ Eve with Palestinian protests assured and lone wolf bombers and killers feared.  NYPD mobilizes dogs and drones, calls the ball drop “our Superbowl.”

Overshadowed by Hamas. Putin escalates his terror in the Ukraine – shelling schools, markets and hospitals in six cities, firing off 122 rockets and 36 drones.  President Joe scolds Republicans holding up military aid to Ukraine (and Israel), saying: “History will judge harshly those who fail to answer freedom’s call.”  Governor Abbott (R-Tx) responds by sending more busloads of migrants – causing NYC to fine the drivers and impound the vehicles.

Maine follows Colorado in throwing Donald Trump off the ballot.  Nikki Haley fails to capitalize after failing to say what the Civil War was about.  Ron deSantis talks, but nobody’s listening.

Saturday, December 30, 2023

Dow:  Closed

Intrigue swirls.  Local police, media panickers and the FBI all warn of unprecedented terror threats for New  Years’ Eve, citing the Israeli-Hamas war, and also Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Russia, China and North Korea.  Politicians pose with bristling cops and snarling dogs.  Al Qaeda (remember them?) releases an inspirational video and Yemenese Houthi king Mohammed al-Houthi (a narcissistic fellow on the order of another fat politician nearer home) promises to keep attacking shipping in the Red Sea.

But the real danger to several northern, Democratic mayors are busloads of migrants that keep dumping their cargo on the streets, despite prohibitions.  Republicans on vacation says they want border reforms but are unable to agree or articulate upon these are.  Machine guns?  Land mines?  The situation bears an eerie resemblance to Gaza, except that the hostages are the Ukrainian and Israeli military denied guns & ammo.

Absent terror, struggles in the courts continue until the close of day.  Donald Trump wins some technical victories but Maine throws him off the primary ballot.  Momfluencer Jodi pleads guilty, womanhunters track down Murder Mom in the U.K.  But prosecutors give up on another trial for Cryotocrook Sam Bankman-Fried (who already has enough time on his hands).  And legislators in stats across America pass laws against guns, porn, even “fuzzy dice”.

Sunday, December 31, 2023

Dow: Closed

And New Years’ Eve finally arrives with most ready to wish goodbye to 2023.

NSC’s John Kirby takes the stage on Sunday talkshows, denies that America is plotting war after sinking Houthi boats targeting Red Sea shipping but acknowledging creation of an Operation Security Guardian to protect the cargo ships; denouncing Congressional hostage-holding for military funding to Israel and Ukraine.  “The Week” interviews three young, female Team Trump defectors now ratting him out to the various prosecutors, writing books and warning that he meant what he said about dictatorship.  (Trump dismisses them as ungrateful grafters.)

The CDC, reporting a 40% increae in Tripledemic cases (COVID, flu and RSV, promotes a return to masks.  A TV doctor advises holiday gatherers: “Spread good cheer, not viruses.”  Good cheer in short supply along Pacific Coast where “rogue waves” keep crashing ashore; unrest also washes up on foreign shores.  Paris mobilizes 90,000 flics to fight expected terror, Germany seizes three malcontents plotting to blow up Cologne Cathedral.

Let’s examine it by category…

Wages (hourly, p/c.)

Wages were stagnant through 2013-4 but picked up (a little) in 2014-5 for an average increase of 1.30 in the Index (which translates to a raise of about a quarter an hour).

Median Income

Median income was not calculated until this year.  Debtclock’s unofficial figures show that median income was $28.820 in 2014, 28,482 in 2000 and $28,810 now.  Can you spell “stagnation”?

Unemployment % (a)

The big success story (if you don’t look at workforce participation).  Bureau of Labor Statistics figures showed a drop of over 40% over two years.

Official #   (b)

Although not calculated back to 2013, both figures from debtclock mirrored the BLS numbers.

Unofficial #   (b)

Workforce Participation

Number & percentage  (c)

The trendy new app for Republicans who want to Bash Barry on jobs (but don’t want to raise the word “inequality”), these figures were not measured until 2015.  Debtclock does note that there were five thousand more Americans in the workforce in 2000, fifteen thousand less were discouraged

     Total Inflation

Only about a one percent increase per year over the last two years.

Food*

Up nearly two percent in 2013-14 and 2014-5... not too bad.  But the real savings came on…

Gas

Prices at the pump dropped by over seven percent in 2013-14, twice that in 2014-5 and a hefty -21.87% over 2013-5.

Medical Costs

Medical costs were up about 2.5% in 2013-4, down by about the same amount in 2014-15 and, so virtually unchanged.

 Dow Jones

Despite the Greek bankruptcy, it was up about 15% over two years (at the same time that wages (above) were down a fraction.

Sales rebounded from the recession, and…

Prices were up too.  Good for Don Jones, homeowner, bad for Don the homeseeker.

Debt was up over 2013-4 and up a little less in 2014-5 as the squeezed Dons began cutting back on purchases.

Revenues (taxes) were up a hefty 16.7 points over two years, while…

Expenditures were down, especially in 2014-5.  A welcome breath of fiscal responsibility (which the President and Congress each take credit for).

Up only about 3% over two years, which doesn’t seem so bad except that it never goes down – not in this century, anyway.

Same… up only about 8% over two years, which doesn’t seem so bad except that it never goes down – not in this century, anyway.

A volatile and important index, this has only increased by about one percent over the last two years and actually fell in 2014-5.

Down only about half a percentage point… see personal debt above.  (We don’t know how much of it remains oil, weapons and Hollywood frippery, but it’s a nice trend.

For a while (2013-4) we splurged but put the brakes on last year… see personal debt above.

Dropped in 2013-4 and more so in 2014-5, over 8% over two years.

Down – what did you think?  But not as much as it could’ve been.

Up, but not so much as some believe… they have been more active but we keep killing their Number Two Men.

Down substantially in 2013-4, but not so much in 2014-5 as all the hot spots – Ukraine, North Korea, Africa, the Mideast – have settled into stalemates.

Way up in 2013, less so since.

Stagnant in 2013-4, way up (9%) in 2014-5.  Liberals say it’s because people don’t have enough money to live on.  Conservatives blame society and debt-strapped states and counties disgorging prisoners.

Some keep getting hotter, some keep getting colder, everyone’s uncomfortable.

Up about 6% a year.  The Problem – DJI goes up when something happens, but there’s no recourse for quiet weeks.

Down a smidgen.

Up somewhat due to recent SCOTUS decision & assorted liberation movements.  But for everyone gratified, some Don Jones, somewhere, is aggrieved.

Down a big (although if you listen to too many doctors, you’d think Apocalypse was at hand).

About the same as above.

Courts keep ruling predictably, litigants adjust expectations accordingly.

Slightly down.

Slightly up.
